We begin to see versions of this design, known as “Garfield’s Monument,” after President William Garfield was assassinated in 1881. Here’s a RARE, small, graphic, hand embroidered interpretation.
This late Victorian all wool piece may have been used repeatedly as a casket cover, perhaps for a fraternal organization such as the Odd Fellows or the Masons.
